Question: Why learn to play an instrument?
Answer: The experience will make you a healthier, happier, and stronger person!

The choice was easily made by many musicians! They heard it calling them through the music that they listened to, saw themselves performing, then became educated about it. These results have ranged from fantastic, to noises that most people would consider to be intolerable. Others were forced into it during childhood, then learned to love, hate, or disregard it completely.

Unfortunately, there have been many who are unwilling to try, due to lack of confidence, previous experiences, responsibilities, or commitments. Several justifiable or lame excuses may have taken them away from treasuring the true, joyful, experiences that music can bring into their lives. Pretending to be a musician on various games, has become an unhealthy substitute, to many people. Learning to play an instrument has become an obstacle, rather than a release, for so many.

If you choose to learn to play an instrument (which I hope you do!), please allow me to forward some advice:

1. Learn to identify instruments while listening to music that you appreciate. This will give you an inclination of which instrument you should choose to play.

2. Take lessons. Make becoming a musician easier, by learning from those who can be trusted and know how to teach. There are many, great online lesson downloads to be taken. You will have the advantage of taking them as often as you wish, whenever you choose.

3. Do not give up, but don’t rush!! Be courageous during the learning curve, and remember that you are capable of anything, if you try with enough effort.

You deserve to learn to play an instrument, regardless of who you are, and where you are!

Bryan Adams – Blues Jam, Live at Slane Castle, Ireland

When you listen to some of the tunes played by a few people on their guitar, it may be a spell-binding experience. You may wonder how expertly they are playing the instrument. This is a vicarious excitement but the good news is that you can also learn to play this great instrument. You may already be aware that this is one of the most popular and oldest musical instruments in the world. So, if you want to learn how to play guitar, the desire is completely justified and you can certainly learn to play the instrument.

History shows that guitar existed even several centuries back. Even now, different versions of this instrument are found in every culture. Amazingly, as days pass by, its popularity has not been dwindling but rather increasing. We can listen to the melodious and mellifluous music flowing from some version of this instrument in every nook and cranny of this planet. That is precisely the reason the number of people who decide to learn how to play guitar has been on the increase. But, among these people, only a few seem to succeed in learning it well and becoming wizards.

Previously, you should take the help of private teachers for learning to play guitar. But, now, after the advent of the Internet, you have several websites that can teach you how to play it. The best thing is that you can learn it absolutely free of cost. These sites have guitar tablature, otherwise called the tab, video tutorials and a software that plays and teaches you midi versions of songs. Since there are many styles of learning, you can choose the style that suits you the best.

But, unfortunately, many people give up in the middle and this shows that they do not have the required determination to learn, nor do they have the patience for going through the learning process. These people should understand that it is not enough if they learn the chords and scales but they must learn to play melodious and captivating tunes also. It is true that you should learn the key skills to play the notes and chords and scales but if you want to move on to the next plank, you should learn to play the songs of other people also to experiment and see how all these notes, scales and chords blend together to produce a great music.

You should never under-estimate the value of repeated practice. As the saying goes, “Practice makes a man perfect”. The reason many people give up is that they do not have the required time, determination and patience to put forth efforts and practice regularly. Of course, you can not expect overnight results. But, if you keep practicing consistently and regularly, you are sure to see remarkable improvement. If you are not able to devote longer hours for practicing, you can have several shorter sessions during the day.

Therefore, it is better you spend considerable time and do your search so as to choose the most suitable website from which you can learn how to play guitar. By practicing regularly, you can learn well and play your favorite tunes comfortably.

Dedicated to Hut-Hor… Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay Were laid spread out before me as her body once did. All five horizons revolved around her soul As the earth to the sun Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn Ooh, and all I taught her was everything Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds Of what was everything. Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything… I take a walk outside I’m surrounded by some kids at play I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear? Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head I’m spinning, oh, I’m spinning How quick the sun can drop away And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass Of what was everything? All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything… All the love gone bad turned my world to black Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I’ll be… yeah… Uh huh… uh huh… ooh… I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I hope you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky, but why Why, why can’t it be, why can’t it be mine

Learning to play a music instrument is one of the most rewarding things that a person can do… Music is wonderful to listen to, and even more enjoyable to play. Many millions of people worldwide take up an instrument each year, some may wish to pursue their studies with a view to becoming a professional musician, whilst others are happy to play at home for their own enjoyment. Whatever the reason, making music is a great pastime.

First of all, let me mention one important point, one that I get asked very often….. I often hear people say “Oh, Id love to play the piano (or guitar, drums, etc) but I’m too old!”… this is nonsense!!! Age is no barrier at all to enjoying music making.. OK, so if you take up the guitar in later life its unlikely you will end up in a top 40 boy band, but you will have a whole new hobby to keep you entertained and have a lot of fun. In my own teaching practice Ive usually found that older students do extremely well… they are usually there because they really want to be there, and therefore work hard and take time to practice. So, whatever your age, be it 8 years old or 80, if you want to play a musical instrument, NOW is the time!

So, you’ve decided that you really want to take up music.. firstly you need to think about what instrument you’ll play. Most people have a very definite idea here, be it a classical instrument such as the violin, cello, clarinet etc, or maybe if you prefer more modern music perhaps the drums, guitar, bass or keyboards. Sometimes your personal circumstances need to be looked at.. do you aim to make music with other people, or just by yourself? if the latter then maybe look at playing guitar or piano, whereas drums, bass etc really need to be played with other musicians to get the most out of them. Also, practical things need to be taken into account.. can you fit a drumkit into your flat? Will the neighbours complain?

The next step is to find a good teacher, and id suggest that you have a couple of lessons before you buy an instrument, just to make sure that you like it and will stick at it. Finding a teacher is usually easy enough… The first port of call could be your local musical instrument store, as they tend to know most of the local music tutors and can tend to personally recommend some. You could also contact organisations such as the musicians union for a list of teachers, or try searching online. Once you have found a teacher that you think will fit the bill, take the plunge, pick up the phone and book that all important first lesson!! For some people this is a big step and most experienced music teachers will expect you to be a bit nervous and will try and put you at ease. So go along to the lesson, enjoy it, ask questions, and if you feel like you and the teacher will get along then you can feel confident about booking more lessons. If for any reason you feel that you and the tutor don’t quite gel, feel free to look elsewhere…. try out some other teachers if need be. In the UK, if you are looking for lessons for children then check that the teacher has a CRB certificate.. this shows that the tutors background has been looked into and he/she has no criminal convictions etc.

Your music tutor should help you to work out what your goals are…. do you want to get good enough to maybe start a band with friends? or perhaps you fancy joining a local amateur orchestra? Or take music grade exams? Exams have really become up to date now, with examination boards such as Rockschool offering drum, guitar and bass exams involving playing along to backing tracks etc. Let your teacher know so that they can tailor the lessons with your goals in mind. Your teacher could also help to advise you once you have decided to invest in an instrument of your own.. they tend to have good relations with the local music stores and also know what to look out for etc. So its good to listen to their advice rather than buying blind.

By this stage, you are on the path to your future musical adventures! There will be times when things go well, and times when things don’t go quite so well, but persevere and you will find fulfillment and enjoyment in your studies.

I’m my own teaching practice, I find it extremely satisfying to see people develop from that first nerve wracking lesson, and see their confidence grow. Ive also worked with children with autism and seeing their progress was a hugely rewarding experience. Music is for everyone, regardless of age or ability, so get involved!
